Elsa Gullberg (1886-1984) is celebrated as an intellectual with artistic talent. Though she was a prolific artist, she was also a producer and theoretician. Because she was a self-made success, Gullberg is regarded with great respect as one of the strongest women in the 20th century. This book includes essays about her childhood, life, her innovative textile work including materials, colors, patterns, and techniques employed, as well as an explanation regarding both the domestic and international response to her work. Following these essays, the comprehensive illustrated catalog of 176 entries has sections devoted to her Swedish handicrafts from 1907-17, furnishings from the 1920s, embroidery, rugs, pictorial weavings, tablecloths, woven textiles, and printed textiles - a great modernist.
