More than 320 icons make up one of the most important collections of Russian icons outside Russia. In 1933, the Swedish banker Olof Aschberg, donated 245 icons to the Nationalmuseum. He added to the donation in 1952 with another thirty. The museum has also made considerable acquisitions of its own in recent years. Approximately a third of the museum’s icons date from before 1700; the rest are of later date or made in Greece or the Balkans. The fact that the Nationalmuseum is now able to publish a catalogue raisonné of the collection of these icons, can be seen as a relection of the recent revival of cultural relations with Russia, a revival that is of significance, not least, for Sweden’s own cultural awareness.
