This exhibition draws from the 600 to 800 villages that constitute one of the finest weaving areas in Persia. Though they cannot differentiate between them all, this book does explain the main characteristics of the various districts and the most important villages. Since virtually all these rugs have the same weaving technique, i.e. symmetric knots and a single shoot of wefts, the other details become increasingly important. For this reason, this book illustrates the reverse side of all 43 pieces as well as complete technical analyses of each. This in-depth presentation of the impressive workmanship involved in creating these exquisite rugs will hopefully challenge the earlier assumptions of Hamadan’s limited artistic merit and instead, celebrate these weavers as wondrously talented artists in their own right.
