40/40 YOUNG ARCHITECTS FROM FINLAND.

Author: Connah, Roger
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Finland

Why is Finnish architecture so good? What is its secret? This book is a contemporary mapping of new architecture, the “ ˜hip’ “ ˜hop’ and “ ˜house’ of young Finnish architects and painters. “ ˜Hip’ might be cool, “ ˜hop’ might be a transition, and “ ˜house’ might be the destination of architecture which must envelope us in the future. 40/40 illuminates the differences within shared, blended concerns, whilst at the same time still hinting at something peculiarly talented about the young architects of this part of the world and their uncanny habit of releasing new energies.

A LITTLE BOOK ABOUT THE RUNES.

Author: Jónasson, Björn
Year: 2001
Country or State of Origin: Iceland

The old runic letters were much used in the Viking Age. Runes have been found from the Black Sea in the South to Russia in the east, all over Europe and Scandinavia, and in Greenland. Runes on memorial stones, weapons, tools, calfskin, wax plates, wooden boards and pins. They were used to send messages, mark possesions, make calendars, write law-books and love letters. This concise and readable book tells the story of the viking runes, and each letter is explained with the help of a runic verse dating from the Viking Age. Aalto, Alvar Symposium, 9th: ELEPHANT & BUTTERFLY - PERMANENCE AND CHANCE IN ARCHITECTURE. With Two CDs.

Author: Heikkinen, Mikko, ed
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Finland

At the Alvar Aalto Symposium in 2000, architecture was likened to an elephant. Elephants live a long time and never forget - unlike a butterfly which lives only today and knows nothing of yesterday. What else is left as a testimony of past empires and cultures, if not their architecture? Today, those same old walls seem good enough again as the settings for new uses of all sorts: a 19th century railway station becomes a museum of art, or dockside warehouse is turned into a luxury hotel. And more people are more interested than ever in “ œgenuine“ materials and traditional building methods. In the context of this charged atmosphere discussions are made at the 9th Alvar Aalto Symposium, 2003 American artist James Turrell speaks about “ ˜old ditch and new water’. In Jyväskylä a study is made on the old riverbed’s geology, as it were, and samples are taken of the new water flowing through it. In Alvar Aalto’s works, tradition and evolution live in symbiosis but they often reveal a desire to surprise and amaze - the slightest touch can change everything. This book includes all the lectures, complete with the final discussion on the two cds. Plans and elevations included.
