Wilhelm Hansen’s outstanding collection of French art was created during and after World War I, and was bequeathed to the Danish state in 1952. The collection is one of the finest of its kind in all of northern Europe, and its quality is acknowledged all over the world. With this in mind, a series of exhibitions has been arranged in the course of 2002 at three of the most important American museums. The present publication is the catalogue that was drawn up for the American exhibition and is the first stage towards the publication of a proper catalogue raisonné - that is, a complete research-based publication of the French collection. The private art collection of professor Fredrik Cygnaeus (1807 “ “ 1881) opened to the public in 1882 and is the oldest art museum in Finland. Initially, the museum’s goal was to incorporate one work from every Finnish artist in the collection, however, with the inclusion of some international work, this goal became unmanageable. Towards 1900, Danish sculptors were working in the shadow of Thorvaldsen, but without conviction. Carl Jacobsen saw sculpture as the bearer of an educative ideal, and by his support for contemporary sculpture he wished to make his contribution to the creation of a great Danish sculptural art-founded on such diverse ideals as the classicism of Thorvaldsen and on French salon sculpture. Modernism has irrecovably changed the way we experience art, and it has become difficult to take the work of this forgotten generation of artists at face value. This volume comprises 135 works of Danish sculpture from around 1860 to 1920, most of them personally acquired by Carl Jacobsen and include among many Vilhelm Bissen, Elna Borch, Ludvig Brandstrup, Stephan Sinding, Theobald Stein & August Saabye.
