AITKEN, DOUG: RISE.
Author: Holm, Michael Juul & Anders Kold, eds
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
MAGASIN shows the first solo exhibition in France of this young California artist. Aitken is known for both his photography and video installations, including the 1999 piece electric youth, for which he won the International Prize at the 1999 Venice Biennial. His combined mastery and poetic stance generate imposing sensual works that navigate in a limbo between the narrative and the plotless while exploring the notions of presence, distance and memory. Time and space expand and contract for the elements and characters that inhabit the highly sophisticated and conceptual worlds Aitken creates, as our senses of perception are challenged when experiencing them. This artist makes art at the edge of the world, with a primitive and ritualism unusual for video but mysteriously present in work that hovers at the edge where desert meets sea.

Bar-El, Ido: PAINTINGS/MAALAUKSIA/MÅLNINGAR.
Author: Rautio, Pessi
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Finland
This unique exhibition brings the opportunity to get to know about the rich and interesting art life in Israel and, at the same time, to have a direct contact with the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Although the country is caught up in a circle of violence, it produces also paintings that combine different, even antagonistic elements into beautiful works of art. Born in 1959, Bar-El rose to fame in Israeli art circles in the early 1990s. His work ellicted almost violent responses among the younger generation. His characteristic attitude combines idealism with cynicism and activism with aesthetism. He has painted on all sorts of flat supports ranging from washing machine covers to cupboard doors - and with the wildest imaginable mediums from house paints to ballpoint pens.

Barker, Merete: MIN LANGE REJSE (My Long Journey). Merete Barker og Maleriet (Merete Barker and Painting)
Author: Lindboe, Ole
Year: 1994
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
A book on a colourful artist, who works in various mediums - painting, sculpture, installation and graphics. She was born in 1944 in Birkerød, Denmark, and educated at the Royal Danish Art Academy in Copenhagen 1966-73, followed by studies in architecture school. With undercurrents of order and repetition, Barker creates abstract works of textural intensity and of strong colours. The works concentrate on the at once opposing yet connected relationships between cities and countryside, decline and growth. Her inspiration is gleaned during visits to countries such as Mexico, the U.S., Guatemala and China, where the energy that she develops in her meeting with local culture and nature is expressed in her works and beyond in her exhibitions.

BARNEY, MATTHEW THE CREMASTER CYCLE.
Author: Spector, Nancy
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Norway
Barney is considered one of the most creative and important artists of our times. He has created a new dimension regarding the concept of art and has put aesthetics back on the map of contemporary art. The Cremaster Cycle is a work consisting of many individual artworks. It is a constellation of films, sculptures, drawings and photos that together form a highly complex story. The prominent all encompassing title Cremaster is the anatomical definition of the muscle that controls elevation and descent, a precondition for testicles. Presented are human themes such as sexuality, gender, destiny, ambitions, conflicts, resolve, energy, fantasy, time and death.

By virtue of its strong historical roots - and therefore also its unmistakable historical perspective - the core of its permanent collection of a museum is truly supraindividual. Alberto Giamcometti, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, AsgerJorn, Yves Klein, Sam Francis, Andy Warhol...these artists, just to name a few among those whom over the years people have come regard as the very essence of the Louisiana Museum. Some of the artists included in this catalogue are Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Jean Arp, Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz, Max Bill, Ross Bleckner, Alexander Calder,Sam Francis, Cindy Sherman, Per Kirkeby, Pablo Picasso and many more. The aquisitions that have been made over the years with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation have to a great extent been decisive and of strategic importance for making Louisiana the museum it is today.

ET DUKKEHJEM (A Doll’s House).
Author: Wendt, Selene, curator
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Norway
The words of and ideas of Henrik Ibsen have inspired a great number of artists around the world. This exhibition gleans something from the rich harvest of ideas and images that have sprung from the seeds of one of his famous plays. The show was conceived and curated by Selene Wendt and is the first in a series of projects that Henie Onstad is creating over the coming years with the Ibsen Foundation in Oslo and the Centre for Ibsen Studies at The Univeristy of Oslo. The artists here form a mixed international group and the variety of their approaches to art underline this diveristy. Their ideas range from the playful manipulation of toys through to the psychoanalytical reading of emotion and memory. Just as in Ibsen’s world, where nothing is simple, these works present the layered complexity of our post modern times. An exciting and interesting catalogue. Artists include Marita Dingus, David Levinthal, Tony Ousler, Olga Tobreluts, Ike Ude and Laurie Simmons.

Author: Gernes, Ulrikka S., Peter Michael Hornung
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
An inspiring and richly illustrated look at Danish artist Poul Gernes’ radiantly coloured decoration of the Copenhagen University Hospital at Herlev. Not only is the extensive decoration of this hospital’s interior the most comprehensive site-specific work in Denmark. It is also an outstanding work of art, where building and visual art are integrated on every level. The authors discuss Poul Gernes’ ideas behind the colours and offer the reader an insight into the functionally determined chromatic systems and their overall effects.
