6 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS FROM KOREA.

Author: Hansen, Mikael and Iben From, eds
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The show intends partly to take part in globalisation and partly to limit the focus to visual arts and the plethora it represents. The exhibition accomplishes this by presenting six selected artists, all Korean residents, and thus in a Danish perspective providing the Danish audience with an opportunity of experiencing how a group of contemporary Korean visual artists work. The artists utilize an international form language in installations, conceptual art, and videos while at the same time researching into developing and refining these expressions.

A major figure on the art scene in Sweden ever since the 1970s, the world of images she uses are instantly fascinating whether it be mixed media on canvas or photography. The bright red contrasting the color black, a sublime and subversive vocabulary of images characterized by desire, corruption, dreams and shadowy landscapes. The aim of the book is to document her extensive oeuvre from the 1970s right up to her most recent paintings from 2004 in both words and pictures. Essays by Lars O. Ericsson, Jan-Erik Lundstrm and John Peter Nilsson approach Maya’s work from different angles, offering readers a comprehensive view. Her work is very up-to-date and has a sense of sophistication.

Author: Zeipel, Agneta Von, Curator
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

In the 1990s and thereafter Annika von Hausswolff became established as one of the leading figures in Swedish and Scandinavian contemporary art. Many of her photographic works have already become classics. She is one of the Swedish artists who has received most notice internationally in recent years and she has represented Sweden at several major exhibitions including the Venice Biennial in 1999. The exhibition comprises almost 50 works and this makes it one of the larger shows of her work to be presented in recent years.

Ærtebjerg, Kathrine: I AM HERE, WHERE ARE YOU? / JEG ER HER, HVOR ER DU?.

Author: Ærtebjerg, Kathrine
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

In Ærtebjerg’s images, dark sihouettes and white figures of Yves Tanuy-like form are located in an indefinable, sometimes almost cartoon-like universe, where coloured bubbles create an atmosphere of lightness and cheerfulness. The figures, which are for the most part human, though generless, are in several of the pictures linked together in playful couples that tend towards the erotic. In other paintings the figures transform into organic, growth-like elements. The various metamorphoses that occur emphasize the sensation of a magical dream world. A graduate from The Royal Danish Art Academy in 2002.

Ærtebjerg, Kathrine: LOOK HOW LARGE MY FLOWERS ARE, SHE ANSWERED/SE HVOR STORE MINE BLOMSTER ER, SVAREDE HUN.

Author: Kielgast, Anne
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The artist’s imagery visualises an extraordinary universe located in the borderland between familiar reality and unknown fantasies. Around a central figure located in a natural landscape, or in the definable space, flowers, insects, animals and birds lie placed in relationship to small figures and geometrical forms, so that the result robs the viewer of all sense of solid ground underfoot. In viewing these paintings, one is continually reminded of childhood imagination and of the magical but often grotesque world of the fairy tale; everything is ambiguous, and consequently many interpretations are possible.

Ærtebjerg, Kathrine: LOST & PRESENT.

Author: Ærtebjerg, Kathrine
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The first solo exhibition in the UK by this graduate from The Royal Danish Art Academy. Her paintings and drawings present a statelss world of in-between’s, a feminine Never Land located between reality and fiction, animal and human, and in instances, between puberty and adulthood. More often than not a female protagonist is located within a fantastical landscape which can include oversized animals, morphed nonhuman silhouettes and unrecognizable flowers and foliage. These are places that suggest a magical refuge but which occasionally hint at the absurd world of fairy tales; ambiguity reigns and any number of readings are possible.

Bergendal, Kerstin: TEMPORARY TERRITORIES/TEMPORÆRE TERRITORIER. Works by Kerstin Bergendal/Arbejder af Kerstin Bergendal

Author: Bergendal, Kerstin
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

This exhibition is a large survey of the artist’s recent works. By using an overall, unifying element in the room - a new bright red floor that occupies almost the entire gallery - the artist provides herself with a kind of game plan. On the red floor, she invites the visitor to engage in projects, creating an interplay with various instances of public space. These works are literally visualisations of roles that artists may play in relation to the surrounding world. As a whole, the exhibition thus serves as a proposal for how the contemporary art practice, which is active today outside of the traditional art institutions, may be communicated meaningfully through an art institution.

BEVILACQUA, MICHAEL.

Author: Holm, Michael Juul, ed
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The exhibition catalogue presents the work of a New York artist, who expresses himself in a formal language and with an iconography that is intensely of today - his painting is far more complex than it looks on the surface. His hard-edge, figurative canvases painted with fluorescent colors are packed with corporate and rock-and-roll band logos. His show lines up in many respects with the artificial pictorial world of a Thomas Deman and virtuosity of a Doug Aitken.
