Country or State of Origin: Sweden

A major figure on the art scene in Sweden ever since the 1970s, the world of images she uses are instantly fascinating whether it be mixed media on canvas or photography. The bright red contrasting the color black, a sublime and subversive vocabulary of images characterized by desire, corruption, dreams and shadowy landscapes. Abrahamsson, Anette: VACUUM NARRATIVUM.

Author: Abrahamsson, Anette
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

This Danish artist was born in 1954 in Norrkping, Sweden and lives in Copenhagen, Denmark today. She paints shoes, potted plants, chairs, a sofa all in muted colors. She describes how she removes any traces of passion on the expressive surface and therefore eliminates the occurance of drama. There is a “dimming” or “matting” in her work which creates a poetic nuance to her art. A painting is a picture, and a picture is a kind of utterance.

AF KLINT, HILMA: I DESCRIBE THE WAY AND MEANWHILE I AM PROCEEDING ALONG IT. A Short Introduction on Method and Intention in Hilma af Klint’s Work from as Esoteric Perspective

Author: Lindén, Gurli
Year: 1998
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a progressive and spiritualist painter and a pioneer among women artists. She regarded herself to to be a disciple of “High Masters” from another dimension, and she expressed in her painting what she understood as her dialogue with the movements of Theosophy and Rosicrucianism. She was also a student of Rudolph Steiner’s teachings. Her work ranges from the colorful, geometrical style of early modernism, to excellent portraits, to an abstracted fantasy world reminiscent of Klimt. This short monograph contains a biographical essay presenting her ideas, her reasoning and her ambitions in a most intriguing and concise manner.

AF KLINT, HILMA: ENHETEN BORTOM MÅNGFALDEN (One Unit Beyond the Multitude). Två perspektiv på Hilma af Klints verk (Two Perspectives of Hilma af Klint’s Work)

Author: Lindén, Gurli and Anna Maria Svensson
Year: 1999
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

Hilma af Klint (1962-1944) is one of the great artists of the 1900s, but her work has been largely ignored for the past half century. In 1986, her work was displayed in Los Angeles for the first time in an international exhibition. The two authors of this book delved separately into the work and life history of this artist. Art historian Svensson explores Klint’s role as a pioneer within the context of the esoteric trends of modernist art. Lindén, on the other hand, investigated her unpublished letters, hereby allowing us to follow her first period of painting from 1906-08 through Klint’s own commentary. With these two perspectives, we are able to understand the entirety of Klints work from two distinct yet complementary perspectives.

In 1986, an exhibition in Los Angeles featured work by pioneers of modernism. Here, the work of Hilma af Klint finally came to light to the delight and surprise of the public. AITKEN, DOUG: RISE.

Author: Holm, Michael Juul & Anders Kold, eds
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

MAGASIN shows the first solo exhibition in France of this young California artist. Aitken is known for both his photography and video installations, including the 1999 piece electric youth, for which he won the International Prize at the 1999 Venice Biennial. His combined mastery and poetic stance generate imposing sensual works that navigate in a limbo between the narrative and the plotless while exploring the notions of presence, distance and memory. Time and space expand and contract for the elements and characters that inhabit the highly sophisticated and conceptual worlds Aitken creates, as our senses of perception are challenged when experiencing them. This artist makes art at the edge of the world, with a primitive and ritualism unusual for video but mysteriously present in work that hovers at the edge where desert meets sea.

ANASTASI, WILLIAM. A Retrospective

Author: Delin Hansen, Elisabeth, Christina Helvad, and Iben Overgaard, et al
Year: 2001
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

This retrospective exhibition marks the first large-scale presentation in Scandinavia of works by this important American artist. He employs a wide spectrum of techniques: sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, collage, “sound objects,” incisions into the wall, even paint poured or thrown onto a wall. With a touch of humor, he inserts reality-elements into the artistic context and enlists the aid of randomness as a collaborator. This catalogue also includes key essays that introduce Anastasi’s entire oeuvre and analyse his work from the 1960s.

ASH FLOWERS.

Author: Chafes, Rui
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

This exhibition catalog introduces the internationally recognized and reknowned Portugese sculptor Rui Chafes. The title, Ash Flowers, is particularly appropriate, for the meanings of the two words seem to be in contradiction with each other, with flowering as a symbol of the beginning of life, while ‘ash’ refers to death. It is between these two basic poles that Chafes’ work is suspended. The exhibition comprises a broad selection of Chafes` iron sculptures from the mid-1990`s until today. His works are installed in such a way that they seem like they are part of the architecture.
