DAHL, J.C.: REFLECTIONS ON. Nature Piece by Piece. J.C. Dahl and the Danish Golden Age
Author: Friborg, Flemming
Year: 1999
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The art of Norwegian born Johan Christian Dahl (1788-1857) bears witness to his standpoint on the cultural division of North and South. He became one of the great painters of Romantic Landscapes, and much of his background was established in Denmark. But, unlike many other Romantic landscape artists of his day, Dahl preferred to depict the natural world of the North rather than that of the South. A delightful guide to his work that especially highlights J.C. Dahl’s contributions to the Danish Golden Age.

DANISH PAINTINGS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. From the Collection of Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr.
Author: Louden, Jay, Fronia W. Simpson, eds
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: Conneticut
A catalogue of the superb collection owned by Ambassador John Loeb, Jr. His aim here was to bring the charm and special beauty of Danish art nearer to the forefront of American consciousness. The collection offers examples from the era of Neo-Classicism, usually associated with the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, the Golden Age of Danish Biedermeier, naturalism of c. 1830-50, as well as the Danish Impressionist art. While many of the names of artists and much of this material will be new to some audiences, the paintings are readily accessible, even familiar to viewers conditioned by 19th century American art. There is much to discover here, from the crisp and colorful floral still lifes of J.L. Jensen to the hushed poise and perfectly resolved geometry of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s domestic interiors. Other artists include among many Vilhelm Kyhn, L.A.Ring, P.S. Krøyer, Jens Juel, Nicolai Abildgaard, J.L.Jensen, Carl Bloch, Christen Dalsgaard, Carl Holsøe, Lauritz Tuxen, Brendekilde, Peter Ilsted, Paul Fischer, Julius Exner, Anna Ancher, Sophie Henck.

DANISH SCULPTURE AROUND 1900.
Author: Ernst Jonas Bencard and Flemming Friborg
Year: 1995
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
Towards 1900, Danish sculptors were working in the shadow of Thorvaldsen, but without conviction. Carl Jacobsen saw sculpture as the bearer of an educative ideal, and by his support for contemporary sculpture he wished to make his contribution to the creation of a great Danish sculptural art-founded on such diverse ideals as the classicism of Thorvaldsen and on French salon sculpture. Modernism has irrecovably changed the way we experience art, and it has become difficult to take the work of this forgotten generation of artists at face value. This volume comprises 135 works of Danish sculpture from around 1860 to 1920, most of them personally acquired by Carl Jacobsen and include among many Vilhelm Bissen, Elna Borch, Ludvig Brandstrup, Stephan Sinding, Theobald Stein & August Saabye.
