In order to pay homage to the breadth of French influence on Nordic art, this exhibition presents the visual experiences of Finnish artists visiting Brittany. Towards the end of the 19th century, Brittany became a haven for artists as they searched for locales that were exotic, primeval and authentic at a time when industrialization and urbanization became widespread. Many Finnish artists ventured to Brittany where they were exposed to the major trends in French art. In addition to paintings and sculptures that reveal the influences of French art, a significant portion of the exhibit consists of ethnographic objects and material from Brittany itself.

When August Cappelen (1827-1852) died at an early age, he was on the verge of international recognition. In Norway, he had become regarded as one of the leading landscape painters. He belonged to the so-called Düsseldorf school in Norwegian painting, which filled a peculiar position bridging Late Romanticism and Early Realism. However, his very personal way of looking at the landscape, the expressive character of his work, and his use of subtle coloring were clearly related to neo-romantic trends at the turn of the century.

Produced under the patronage of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf and President Boris Yeltsin, this stunning exhibition on cousins Gustav III and Catherine the Great sheds light on the common heritage between Sweden and Russia. Though they shared interests in history, philosophy, theatre, and the French language, the two monarchs were constant rivals: Catherine sought to control Swedish domestic politics, while Gustav dreamed of regaining lost territories in the east.
