DAAE SAMLINGEN (The Daae Collection).

Author: Huitfeldt, Johanne
Year: 1990
Country or State of Origin: Norway

The Daae collection of Chinese art, mostly porcelain, was acquired during Ivar Munthe Daae’s career in China in the late 1800’s. Most interesting is a priceless large bulbous bottle painted with a blue dragon from the early 1400’s. There is a fine group of Wucai vases from the late Ming and early Ching, and a group of 20 “Famille Verte” items from the Kangxi period (1662-1722). Porcelain from other dynasties is also included as well as examples of embroidered clothing. The beauty and importance of this collection is readily apparent.

EXPLORING CENTRAL ASIA 2 Volumes. Collecting Objects and Writing Cultures from the Steppes to the High Pamirs 1896-1899

Author: Nicolaisen, Ida ed. Fihl, Esther
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: New York

In the 1890s, the Danish lieutenant Ole Olufsen set out to lead two expeditions to Tsarist Central Asia. Exploring areas that were still blank on European and Russian maps, the participants spent more than a year traveling on horseback. Esther Fihl offers an in-depth study of these Danish expeditions and presents the magnificent collection of objects brought back to the National Museum of Denmark. Drawing on diaries, reports and published works and a scrutiny of the guiding principles for their collecting objects, she demonstrates how these explorers portrayed their cultures encountered. The work is a treasure for anyone interested in Central Asia, early anthropological theory, material culture, or European travel literature and the beautiful objects made in this part of the world.
