A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VIKINGS. The Last Pagans or the First Modern Europeans ?

Author: Clements, Jonathan
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: London

Between the 8th and 11th centuries, the Vikings surged from their Scandinavian homeland to trade, plunder, explore, and invade, from Newfoundland to Baghdad. They are alternately seen as great seafarers and desperate outcasts, noble heathens and oafish pirates, the last pagans and the first of the modern Europeans. This concise study of Viking history aligns medieval chronicles, Norse sagas, and Muslim accounts with modern genetic profiling and climatology. It explains why the Danish king Harald Bluetooth lent his name to a 21st-century wireless technology; which future saint laughed as she buried foreign ambassadors alive; and how the Vikings ultimately became us.

In late March 1943, in the midst of WWII, four Norwegian saboteurs arrived in northern Norway on a fishing cutter and set anchor in Toftefjord to establish a base for their operations. However, they were betrayed, and a German boat attacked the cutter, creating a battlefield and spiraling Jan Baalsrud into the adventure of his life. The only survivor and wounded, Baalsrud begins a perilous journey to freedom, swimming icy fjords, climbing snow-covered peaks, enduring snowstorms, and getting caught in a monstrous avalanche. ESCAPE FROM THE THIRD REICH. The Harrowing True Story of the Largest Rescue Effort Inside Nazi Germany

Author: Persson, Sune
Year: 2009
Country or State of Origin: New York

The Swedish Red Cross expedition to the German concentration camps from March to April 1945 was the largest rescue effort inside Germany during WWII. Led by Count Bernadotte of Wisborg, the mission became known for its distinctive buses: Each bus was purposefully painted entirely white except for the Red Cross emblem on the side so that they would not be mistaken for military targets. According to conservative figures in May 1945, at least 17,000 prisoners were transported to Sweden by these white buses. Included are exclusive never-before-published photographs of the bus journeys.

GERMAN PARATROOPS IN SCANDINAVIA. Fallschirmjager in Denmark and Norway April - June 1940

Author: Gonzalez Oscar
Year: 2009
Country or State of Origin: Pennsylvania

The German conquest of Denmark and Norway in spring 1940 presents an interesting study of joint strategy between ground, air, and sea forces. In this campaign, the Germans placed great emphasis on mobility, speed, and surprise. The Fallschirmjäger of 1940 was a well-trained, highly-motivated force, and their participation in Operation “ œWeserübung“ “ “ the codename for the Wehrmacht assault on Denmark and Norway “ “ is this subject of this book. Among the topics discussed are German paratroop operations (some of the first combat jumps of the war) against the main Danish and Norwegian bridges and aerodromes, the jump on DombÃ¥s, behind enemy lines, and also their tenacious resistance on the snow-covered grounds of Narvik.

HITLER’S SAVAGE CANARY. A History of the Danish Resistance in World War II

Author: Lampe, David
Year: 2010
Country or State of Origin: New York

After Adolph Hitler made plans to create a “ model protectorate“ out of Denmark, Winston Churchill predicted the nation would become the Führer’s tame canary. Isolated from the Allies and fueled only by a sense of human decency and national pride, the Danes created an extraordinary resistance movement that proved a relentless thorn in the Nazis’ side. German troops were stymied again and again by the sabotage of railways and airbases and some 7,000 Jews were carried to safety in Sweden. They were not soldiersthey were simply ordinary citizens who refused to stand idly by and witness an atrocity. The story of their selfless courage and daring should inspire countless future generations.

I GO TO AMERICA . Swedish American Women and the Life of Mina Anderson

Author: Lintelman, Joy K.
Year: 2009
Country or State of Origin: St. Paul, MN

Near the end of her life, Mina Anderson wrote a lively, intimate memoir, a piece so interesting and informative that renowned Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg used it to shape the central female character of his beloved emigrant novels. But Moberg’s archetypical Swedish settler “ œKristina“ is lonely and depressed, constantly yearning for her homeland. Mina’s story was quiet different. Shocasing this previously untranslated memoir, I Go To America traces Mina’s trip across the Atlantic to Wisconsin and then to the Twin Cities, where she worked as a domestic servant. It explores her move to rural Mille Lacs County, where she and her husband worked a farm, raised seven children, and contributed widely to rural Swedish community life through her poetry, fiction, and letters to Swedish American newspapers.
