HISTORY OF SWEDEN, A. From Ice Age to our Age
Author: Lindqvist, Herman
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
For fourteen thousand years, people have hunted, grown food, built, struggled and loved in what is today called - Sweden. The way this once so barren area at the edge of northern Europe’s ice cover became one of the richest and most developed countries in the world, is told in this book. The author writes the history of this country, where war has often been the normal state of affairs, where peace has been the exception, and of its people who have survived all difficulties, who have never ceased to dream and who today are involved in planning the future of Europe. Easy to follow and captivating, Lindqvist gives us political history in a light, narrative form.

HITLER’S SAVAGE CANARY. A History of the Danish Resistance in World War II
Author: Lampe, David
Year: 2010
Country or State of Origin: New York
After Adolph Hitler made plans to create a “ model protectorate“ out of Denmark, Winston Churchill predicted the nation would become the Führer’s tame canary. Isolated from the Allies and fueled only by a sense of human decency and national pride, the Danes created an extraordinary resistance movement that proved a relentless thorn in the Nazis’ side. German troops were stymied again and again by the sabotage of railways and airbases and some 7,000 Jews were carried to safety in Sweden. They were not soldiersthey were simply ordinary citizens who refused to stand idly by and witness an atrocity. The story of their selfless courage and daring should inspire countless future generations.

I GO TO AMERICA. Swedish American Women and the Life of Mina Anderson
Author: Lintelman, Joy K.
Year: 2009
Country or State of Origin: St. Paul, MN
Near the end of her life, Mina Anderson wrote a lively, intimate memoir, a piece so interesting and informative that renowned Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg used it to shape the central female character of his beloved emigrant novels. But Moberg’s archetypical Swedish settler “ œKristina“ is lonely and depressed, constantly yearning for her homeland.Mina’s story was quiet different.Shocasing this previously untranslated memoir, I Go To America traces Mina’s trip across the Atlantic to Wisconsin and then to the Twin Cities, where she worked as a domestic servant. It explores her move to rural Mille Lacs County, where she and her husband worked a farm, raised seven children, and contributed widely to rural Swedish community life through her poetry, fiction, and letters to Swedish American newspapers.

IMAGES OF ANCESTORS.
Author: Højte, Jakob Munk, ed
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
To achieve status in the classical world, a certain intimacy with one’s ancestors was essential. By referring to the illustrous exploits and qualities of his forebears, a man could strengthen his position in society. If his origins lacked sufficient glory, he could contruct a family tree and testify to its authenticity through the judicious use of portraits and legendary allusions. In this volume, eleven internationally recognized scholars analyze the artistic, social and political significance of ancestral representation in ancient Greece, Etruria and Rome.

ISLANDS OF BEAUTY AND BOUNTY. A Historical Profile of the Danish West Indies
Author: York, Nina, Translator
Year: 1986
Country or State of Origin: U.S. Virgin Islands
Drawn from an impressive work entitled “ œDanmark“ published in 1856, these translated excerpts focus on the Danish West Indies around the time that Governor Peter von Scholten emancipated the slaves in 1848. Never before published in English, the comprehensive, yet charming description of West Indian life and nature-in St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas-has a great deal more to offer today’s reader than just a sentimental observation of times past. Readers can easily sense the natural curiosity and captivation of the original author, the Danish naturalist, A.S. Ørsted, as he encountered the rich botanical world of the tropics with his abundant knowledge thereof. The book is the companion text to six renowned lithographs ( by Emil Bærenten) of the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.

Jærn, Albert: AND THEN CAME THE LIBERATORS.
Author: Jærn, Albert
Year: 2011
Country or State of Origin: Wisconsin
“ œThis book is about me and mine during the war years but that is the way it had to be. . . . I hope that this journal can serve as a journal for many others. Most of all, I hope that the younger generation will find something that they will always remember about tyranny and oppression.“ —from the foreword by Albert Jærn, 1945. Albert Jærn captures in words and woodcuts the atrocities and indignities Norwegians witnessed during their country’s five-year-long occupation by Hitler’s forces from 1940 to 1945. Jærn worked as a book illustrator for Aschehoug, a well-known publishing house, where he also produced the cover art for some 500 books. As in this wartime diary, Jærn favored block cuts of wood or linoleum. In simplified lines and surfaces, free of affectation or exaggeration, he captured the point he wished to communicate and managed to make something new each time. Keeping this wartime journal put Jærn in great personal danger. He scrupulously hid this work away in a secret safe, which despite repeated Nazi raids and ransacking of his home, went undiscovered by the occupiers. After peace came to Norway in 1945, the notes and woodcuts were published by Ekko Forlag, which had been shut down by the Nazis during the occupation. Jærn published his diary in the hope that his countrymen would never forget their ordeal. He wanted Norwegians to remember their own confusion and fear as well as the enemies’ tyranny and oppression. The book, translated into English for the first time, is a documentation of the occupation and an appreciation of Jærn’s artistry and bravery.

KINGS AND CITIZENS. The History of the Jews in Denmark 1622-1983
Author: Haxen, Ulf
Year: 1983
Country or State of Origin: New York
With the participation of the Danish Royal Library in Copenhagen, this exhibition catalogue presents a beautiful collection of Judaica and Hebraica in the form of manuscripts and printed books. This collection dates back to the European Enlightenment, when kings, nobles, and high ranking officials took interest and pride in acquiring manuscripts and books. The acquisition of manuscripts and books from the private collections of David Simonsen and Lazarus Goldschmidt as well as the survival of the Royal Library’s books from the ravages of the Nazi army during the Second World War make this an important collection of Judaica and Hebraica.
