The Chilchos valley was inhabited with the Chachapoya and Inca cultures in pre-hispanic times. After a drastic decline in population in the colonial period, the valley was forgotten. Within the state of rediscovering the valley in the 1900s, new socio-cultural processes of adaptation to the environment began with migrations from the Sierra.
