EDVARD PETERSENS UDVANDRERBILLEDE (Edvard Petersen’s Emigration Painting).
Author: Sørensen, Jens Erik, ed
Year: 1985
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
“Emigrants at Larsens Plads” by Petersen (1841-1911) is one of the most popular paintings in the Art Museum of Aarhus. It was painted in 1890 and already the following year it came to Aarhus. He has a keen eye for details, and because of the naturalistic qualities of the painting - it almost looks like a photograph - it has found its way to a large number of history books as an historical document. The essay sets out to question this use of painting by looking at his background in the aftermath of the tradition of the so-called Golden Age of Danish Painting, and goes on to take a closer look at the painter’s working method, technique, and artistic aims.

GENOESE DRAWINGS.
Author: Schleier, Mary Newcome
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The collection of Old Master drawings from the Genoese school in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen have lived an obscure life in the collection’s Solander boxes. Few of them have ever been published and only one has been shown to the public within living momory. Although small, the collection (and consequently this catalogue) spans the entire period of the Genoese Republic, from 1528 to 1797 when it became the Republic of Ligurua, and then part of Italy (1815). The collection embraces a wide range of master drawings by the founders of the Genoese school - the famous Luca Cambiaso and his pupils Lazaro Tavarone, Bernardo Castello and Giovanni Battista Paggi. It contains rare examples of the graceful and charming drawings by Valerio Castello, and a number of fully developed compositional studies by Domenico Piola and his thriving studio. Masters like Bartolomeo Biscaino, Domenico Fiasella, Alessandro Magnasco, Francesco Castiglione, Lorenzo de Ferrari, Carlo Giuseppe Ratti and Francesco Narice are also represented.

Jaakola, Alpo: EVERY STEP ON THE FORBIDDEN LAWN/JOKAINEN ASKEL KIELLETYLLÄ NURMIKOLLA.
Author: Karvonen,-Kannas, Kerttu, Anne Pelin Käännkset, eds
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Finland
An exhibition presenting Gallen-Kallela Museum’s current artist guest, Jaakola. He grew up in a working-class home, he preserved a natural childlike quality, laced with hatred of authority even when he had earned fame and recognition. Jaakola’s primitivism in both his art and his lifestyle was carefully considered and civilized. He shared a deep and similar love of nature, the fantastical, individuality, Finnishness-and above all art.
