A monumental retrospective of the Swedish “Painter Prince” Eugen Bernadotte was held for the 50th anniversary of his death in 1948, accompanied by this equally monumental publication. Eugen’s villa Waldemarsudde in the Stockholm parklands has been a mecca for nature lovers and art conoisseurs since that time, when the princely home with gardens and the largest private painting collection in Sweden to date were opened to the public as a national bequest. Eugen was himself a gifted painter who chose the artist’s life over that initially expected of the son of a monarch, and found success as an artist, patron, and supporter of the breakaway faction of Academy artists which included among others Anders Zorn. Though by necessity maintaining a requisite political neutrality, his involvement by way of other artists with the political and social turmoil of the early part of the century remains one of the most compelling aspects of his life. This exhaustive work replete with Eugen’s eerily thoughtful landscapes over many decades is an essential addition to Swedish art scholarship.

Prins Eugen, the youngest son of King Oscar II, was one of Sweden’s finest landscape painters. This catalogue from an exhibit of his works at the Norwegian National Gallery in 1988 includes five excellent articles by experts on the subject. This presentation of the Renaissance and Baroque bronzes of the Nationalmuseum is the first attempt to introduce this important collection to the international art world by means of a catalog raisonné.
