ERICHSEN, THORVALD PÅ LILLEHAMMER (Thorvald Erichsen at Lillehammer).
Author: Per Bj. Boym
Year: 1990
Country or State of Origin: Norway
Beautiful impressionist works in Lillehammer, Norway, by artist Thorvald Erichsen (1868-1939). The captivating and bright colors light up each page. A sensational and very modern colorist - the pastel complexity of Bonnard, but with the larger and calmer surfaces of a premature Morandi - one of the lesser known Internationally of the Nordic set, but one of the most striking. This is an excellent monograph on Erichsen.

Eugen, Prince: PRINS EUGEN/ PRINCE EUGEN. Minnet av ett Landskap/ Memories of a Landscape
Author: Brummer, Hans-Henrik
Year: 1998
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
A monumental retrospective of the Swedish “Painter Prince” Eugen Bernadotte was held for the 50th anniversary of his death in 1948, accompanied by this equally monumental publication. Eugen’s villa Waldemarsudde in the Stockholm parklands has been a mecca for nature lovers and art conoisseurs since that time, when the princely home with gardens and the largest private painting collection in Sweden to date were opened to the public as a national bequest. Eugen was himself a gifted painter who chose the artist’s life over that initially expected of the son of a monarch, and found success as an artist, patron, and supporter of the breakaway faction of Academy artists which included among others Anders Zorn. Though by necessity maintaining a requisite political neutrality, his involvement by way of other artists with the political and social turmoil of the early part of the century remains one of the most compelling aspects of his life. This exhaustive work replete with Eugen’s eerily thoughtful landscapes over many decades is an essential addition to Swedish art scholarship.

EUGEN, PRINS 1865-1947.
Author: Tone Skedsmo, Dag Widman and Svein Olav Hoff
Year: 1988
Country or State of Origin: Norway
Prins Eugen, the youngest son of King Oscar II, was one of Sweden’s finest landscape painters. This catalogue from an exhibit of his works at the Norwegian National Gallery in 1988 includes five excellent articles by experts on the subject. Eugen’s landscape paintings reflect the moods prevalent around him in Nordic art, but have a restrained intensity that can perhaps be traced to his unique life situation and the burden of living out the life of an artist while maintaining the office and role of Prince. An unquestionably important figure on the Scandinavian firmament.

FÜSSLI.
Author: Görel Cavalli-Björkman and Nils-Göran Hökby, eds
Year: 1990
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
This publication represents the work of Henry Füssli (1741-1825) whose paintings and drawings drew from Shakespeare and Milton for subjects of romanticism. FRÄMLINGEN (Foreigners). Dröm Eller Hot (Dream or Threat)
Author:
Year: 1996
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
In the spirit of today’s youth, this highly controversial topic regarding the attitudes of the West towards “foreigners” comes to light through this examination of the representations of foreigners in art. The tone of these representations range from respect, pity, to forthright hatred, though Western hierarchy is often expressed very subtly. Also, the concept of the exotic has always been a source of intrigue, especially in art. Through our abilities of thought and imagination, we can remove ourselves from our reality and create a dream-world where everything is markedly different. A foreign culture can be romanticized when there is dissatisfication with one’s own reality. Yet, nationalistic feelings, for example, can change a dream about a beautiful island culture in the south into the belief that the culture is made up lazy individuals. This book attempts to illuminate the dividing line between exoticism and hatred through numerous essays such as, “Dream of the Orient,” “Concept of the African,” and “Swedes’ impression of Laplanders,” to name a few.
