ANGSTEN OG DENS SUBLIMERING (The Sublimation of Angst). Billeder af Døden i Europæisk Malerkunst 1780-1830 (Pictures of Death in European Painting 1780-1830)
Author: Alena Marchwinski
Year: 1995
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The enshrinement of death, its aesthetic, erotic and metaphysical sublimation and the recognition of the psychological and political brutality of death are all aspects of the romantic vision. This is a study of a fascinating idea in European art, of Goya, Jacques Francois Joseph, Claude Louis Desrais, Gericault, Delacroix, and the ever mysterious Caspar David Friedrich.

BRITTANY OF ARTISTS IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, THE / TAITEILIJOIDEN BRETAGNE 1800-LUVUN LOPUSSA/ LA BRETAGNE DES ARTISTES À LA FIN DU XIXe SICLE.
Author: Kivimäki, Kati, and Marja Supinen, eds
Year: 1998
Country or State of Origin: Finland
In order to pay homage to the breadth of French influence on Nordic art, this exhibition presents the visual experiences of Finnish artists visiting Brittany. Towards the end of the 19th century, Brittany became a haven for artists as they searched for locales that were exotic, primeval and authentic at a time when industrialization and urbanization became widespread. Many Finnish artists ventured to Brittany where they were exposed to the major trends in French art. In addition to paintings and sculptures that reveal the influences of French art, a significant portion of the exhibit consists of ethnographic objects and material from Brittany itself.
