ANCHER, ANNA.
Author: Jacobsen, Claus
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
Anna Ancher is one of the foremost Scandinavian impressionist painters; her sense of color and light and sensitive brush strokes are a pleasure for everyone to see. She worked in Skagen with her husband, Michael Ancher, a very accomplished artist in his own right. She also painted at the same time as P.S. Krøyer and many other famous Skagen artists. This richly illustrated book tells the story of her childhood, her life as an artist, wife, and mother. Included are unknown paintings, private photographs and drawings from her sketch book.

EDVARD PETERSENS UDVANDRERBILLEDE (Edvard Petersen’s Emigration Painting).
Author: Sørensen, Jens Erik, ed
Year: 1985
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
“Emigrants at Larsens Plads” by Petersen (1841-1911) is one of the most popular paintings in the Art Museum of Aarhus. It was painted in 1890 and already the following year it came to Aarhus. He has a keen eye for details, and because of the naturalistic qualities of the painting - it almost looks like a photograph - it has found its way to a large number of history books as an historical document. The essay sets out to question this use of painting by looking at his background in the aftermath of the tradition of the so-called Golden Age of Danish Painting, and goes on to take a closer look at the painter’s working method, technique, and artistic aims.

Jaakola, Alpo: EVERY STEP ON THE FORBIDDEN LAWN/JOKAINEN ASKEL KIELLETYLLÄ NURMIKOLLA.
Author: Karvonen,-Kannas, Kerttu, Anne Pelin Käännökset, eds
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Finland
An exhibition presenting Gallen-Kallela Museum’s current artist guest, Jaakola. He grew up in a working-class home, he preserved a natural childlike quality, laced with hatred of authority even when he had earned fame and recognition. Jaakola’s primitivism in both his art and his lifestyle was carefully considered and civilized. He shared a deep and similar love of nature, the fantastical, individuality, Finnishness-and above all art.

RØRBYE VED SERAILLETS MUR (Rørbye at the Wall of Seraille). Omkring et Maleri i Aarhus Kunstmusem
Author: Jakobsen, Kristian, ed
Year: 1982
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
Rørbye (1803-48) was the only Danish painter of the Golden Age who ventured to travel beyond Italy. The painting in Aarhus, dated 1846, is based on drawings and watercolours made on location in Greece and Turkey and on two oil-sketches from Italy. During his stay in Istanbul from December 20,1835 to February 1, 1836, he succeeded in making numerous sketches, but none in oil. The rich light and splendid colouring therefore must be the artist’s own contribution to the composition. His essay views the monuments of Istanbul as gigantic, romantic ruins of Constantinople.
