Author: Laine, Merit, Carolina Brown
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

Lundberg was a young portrait painter, who left Sweden during the difficult years at the end of Charles XII:s reign but returned in 1745 . He became an immediate and lasting success and evenutally became a Court painter. In this, the first monograph on Lundberg since 1902, the authors deal with Lundberg’s artistic development and studio practices as well as his career strategies, particularly in Paris where the competition among the pastel painters was very keen. His Swedish career and the portrait types he created are discussed in relation to the ideological, social and political tensions of the times, as well as the stylistic and thematic influences from French literary, philosophical and artistic developments. The circumstances of his life and contempoary evaluations of his work are also taken as a starting point of a discussion of the Swedish art scene and market, as well as the artist’s role in Swedish society during the 18th century.

LILJEFORS, BRUNO.

Author: Ellenius, Allan
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

Liljefors (1860-1939) was a Swedish artist, the most important and probably the most influential wildlife painter of the late 19th and early 20th century. All his life he was a hunter, and he often painted predator-prey action, for example fox-hare, sea eagle-eider, goshak-black goose. However, he never exaggerated the ferocity of the predator or the pathos of the prey, depicting with sensitivity and accuracy the birds and animals of his native Sweden in their natural habitats. His paintings feature in the background the flora, the marshes, the lakes, the sea, and the woodlands of Sweden, although the focus is always on the animals. This book shows the greatness of Liljefors and his ability to show animals in their environment.
