AGRIPPINA MINOR: Life and Afterlife / Liv og Eftermæle.
Author: Moltesen, Mette and Anne Marie Nielsen eds
Year: 2007
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
This book focuses on the Roman empress Agrippina Minor (AD 15-59), one of the most influential women in Antiquity. She was the sister of the emperor Caligula, wife of the emperor Claudius, and mother of the emperor Nero. The focal point of the book is a statue of Agrippina in dark green stone of which the head is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and the body in a museum in Rome. Both had been found in Rome in the 1880s. Twelve articles written in German, English, and Italian by Danish and foreign scholars deal with the life and the portraits of Agrippina, her influence on her own age and on posterity, and finally Agrippina as she has been depicted in films. All articles are also included in Danish translation.

CULTURE AND CHANGE IN CENTRAL EUROPEAN PREHISTORY. 6TH TO 1ST MILLENNIUM BC
Author: Vandkilde, Helle
Year: 2007
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
This book is a cohesive overview of Central European prehistory from the introduction of agriculture around 6000 BC to the state-forming processes that began to emerge during the first millennium BC. A complex mosaic of culture, society and processes is mirrored in the material world in certain periods involves a large part of the Eurasian continent. Culture and change must be understood as both localized and macro-regional: this book is a cultural-historical tale - inspired by, for example, the attempts of French historians to integrate different levels of history.

DANISH PAINTINGS OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY. From the Collection of Ambassador John L. Loeb, Jr.
Author: Louden, Jay, Fronia W. Simpson, eds
Year: 2005
Country or State of Origin: Conneticut
A catalogue of the superb collection owned by Ambassador John Loeb, Jr. His aim here was to bring the charm and special beauty of Danish art nearer to the forefront of American consciousness. The collection offers examples from the era of Neo-Classicism, usually associated with the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, the Golden Age of Danish Biedermeier, naturalism of c. 1830-50, as well as the Danish Impressionist art. While many of the names of artists and much of this material will be new to some audiences, the paintings are readily accessible, even familiar to viewers conditioned by 19th century American art. There is much to discover here, from the crisp and colorful floral still lifes of J.L. Jensen to the hushed poise and perfectly resolved geometry of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s domestic interiors. Other artists include among many Vilhelm Kyhn, L.A.Ring, P.S. Krøyer, Jens Juel, Nicolai Abildgaard, J.L.Jensen, Carl Bloch, Christen Dalsgaard, Carl Holsøe, Lauritz Tuxen, Brendekilde, Peter Ilsted, Paul Fischer, Julius Exner, Anna Ancher, Sophie Henck.

The second part of the book gives examples of how these categories of motifs -religious motifs, portrait paintings, still lifes and genre motifs by the likes of El Greco, Zurbarán, Velázquez and Goya -inspired a number of paintings in Sweden as well as elsewhere in Europe in the period from the 19th century up to present.

FRENCH PAINTINGS III. Nineteenth Century
Author: Grate, Pontus, Per Hedström
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
With this volume devoted to the 19th century, Pontus Grate brings to a conclusion his survey of the Nationalmuseum’s collection of French painting: one of the leading collections outside of France. The collection currently comprises 134 items. The oldest of the the artists, Butay, Boilly, Gerard, Hersent and Ingres, were born between 1759 and 1780. The next group of artists were born between 1791 (Gericault) and 1829 (Henner) and thus as a rule were active during the romantic and/or realistic periods. The remainder belonged to the impressionist generation or to the generation after that. Youngest of them all was Pierre Bonnard who was born in 1867, the year in which Ingres died, and lived on until 1947. Consequently the museum’s collection covers a long period in the development of French art; remarkably fruitful period marked by great stylistic variety.
