CHALLENGING THE CHATELAINE.

Author: Aav, Marianne, Helen Williams Drutt, eds
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Finland

An extensive international overview of the present diversity of a unique genre of jewelry design - the chatelaine. The exhibition includes works by over seventy artists from Europe, North and South America, Australia and Japan. The invited artists were free to decide on the type of chatelaine they wished to take and to whom it was to be dedicated. The role models could be famous authors, artists, politicians or philosophers just as well the artist’s friends or relatives not previously known to the public. To accompany the work, the artists have prepared brief texts explaining their choices. All the chatelaines were made specifically for this exhibition from 2002 to 2006. Interesting well crafted avant-garde jewelry, not always very decorative often quite industrial looking.

DE PATTA, MARGARET THE JEWELRY OF. A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION

Author: Neubert, George W., Curator of Art
Year:
Country or State of Origin: California

When the artist began her jewelry career there was virtually no tradition of handicrafted jewelry within which to work and few of today’s supporting and nurturing elements for the arts were present. Within this milieu, Margaret De Patta is further distinguished by being one of the few American jewelers whose work and ideas were allied to the then currently evolving ideas presented in the modern art movement. Her strong motivation to establish jewelry as an informed and personal expression of the highest order led her to become one of the leading spokespersons for the dignity of the mealworkers craft as it developed during the relatively arid environment of the thirties in this country.

JENSEN, GEORG GOLD JEWELRY.

Author: Crawford, Alastair
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: New York

The House of Georg Jensen has produced outstanding designs for over a century, inspiring and encouraging an atmosphere of individual talent, often unfettered by commercial restrictions and frequently way ahead of its time. The designs are often referred to as “sculptural” and sometimes as the closest possible métier to three-dimensional art. That those same designs should remain so compelling and unique today is surely a testament to their endurance. This book offers good documentation of gold jewelry done by Georg Jensen through a variety of detailed photographs.
