Lake, Pipaluk: OCEAN.

Author: Schou-Christensen, Jørgen & Pipaluk Lake
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

Lake started working with glass after first studying carpentry and wood carving and then textile design. Her work is primarily based on experimentation with ‘window’ glass, which is shaped after being heated in a kiln together with pieces of sheet copper and brass, or steel wire. Occasionally, she applies various acids, salts, oxides or organic compounds to the glass and the metal, to coax out specific colour effects. Here is a catalogue of the Ocean exhibition, presenting work in which she started by cutting out pieces of glass and metal on the basis of geometric shapes. This enabled her to juxtapose natural laws with the more undefined aspects of life. When she combined this feature with the water-like characteristics of glass, she envisaged a sea of unexplored depths - an ocean of possiblilites.
