SCANDINAVIAN CERAMICS AND GLASS 1940s TO 1980s.

Author: Fischler George, Gould Barret
Year: 2000
Country or State of Origin: Pennsylvania

During the second half of the twentieth century, Scandinavian potters and glassmakers drew on elements present in China and Japan during the period of the Sung Dynasty to produce pieces of beauty and elegance that combined subtle glazes and classical shapes. The qualities came to characterize Scandinavian design in combining the fundamentals of craftsmanship, quality, subtlety, and a relationship to the natural surroundings. With 380 color photographs to illustrate the work, this book is a must for the ceramics and glass collector as well as those who appreciate the results of a collaboration between artist and nature. Concentrating on designs produced in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland following World War II, the book presents the works of ceramics companies such as R**rstrand, Gustavsberg, Arabia, Saxbo, and Palshus, as well as the glass of Orrefors, Kosta, and Iittala. Designs by some of the greatest names in contemporary Scandinavian ceramic and glass design, including Berndt Friberg, Stig Lindberg, Gunnar Nylund, Wilhelm K**ge, Edward Hald, Sven Palmqvist, Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, and Vicke Lindstrand, will be appreciated by all students of twentieth century design. SUENOS/YUME FIFTY YEARS OF THE ART OF DORA DE LARIOS.

Author: Cocks, Barbara
Year: 2009
Country or State of Origin: California

Inspired by the interplay of diverse cultures and study of world religions, De Larios’s art speaks a universal language that reflects her unique pan-cultural vision. Whether in intimate ceramic pieces or large mixed-media architectural commissions, De Larios strives to harmonize the animal and the spiritual, the earthly with the divine. De Larios’s ability to translate universal human experiences into mystical works of art accounts for her international appeal. Her beautiful, whimsical sculptures are much collected. She shows a wonderful sense of humor, when you see her work, you cannot help but smile or laugh. Dora was commissioned to make a dinner set for the White House during the Carter administration by Rosalynn Carter for the Senate Wives Luncheon at the White House. The dinnerware set consisted of a dinner plate, a salad plate and a soup bowl.

VOICES/RÓ “STER. Contemporary Ceramic Art From Sweden (Samtida Svensk Keramisk Konst)

Author: Danius, Sara; Johansson, Patrik photographer
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

Voices is an exhibition of work by ten pioneering Swedish ceramic artists. In curating this exhibition, Inger Molin* has chosen ceramic artists from different generations and with very different voices and approaches to their work.  What they have in common are that they are natural representatives - and leading exponents - of the dynamism and originality of contemporary ceramic art. Viewed together they enable us to discern something unique about the contemporary development of ceramics in Sweden. Free in their relationship to traditional ceramic art they seek new directions and emphasize freedom of expression. No longer is it the material that is important; but what the ceramic artist has to say. Frida Fjellman, Renata Francescon, Eva Hild, Pontus Lindvall, MÃ¥rten Medbo, AnnaSofia Mååg, Gustaf Nordenskiöld, Kjell Rylander, Per B Sundberg and Kenneth Williamsson - their work has been enthusiastically received both at home and abroad. The artists contributing their voices to the exhibition work sculpturally and conceptually, addressing existential issues with humour or as abstractions. Their various approaches and modes of expression are presented in the book Voices, published by Carlsson Bokförlag, with an incisive essay by Sara Danius and Patrik Johansson’s evocative photographs.
