AALTO, ALVAR ARCHITECT THE AALTO HOUSE 1935-36 Volume 6.
Author: Pallasmaa, Juhani, ed
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Finland
The Aalto House is a seminal project in Alvar Aalto’s development from the ideals of orthodox functionalism towards the complex, tactile, inclusive and emotive architecture of his mature age. The design development of the house reveals Aalto’s rejection of simplistic rationality and the emergence of his personal thinking that penetrates into the experiential essence of architectural pleasure. The book includes brief descriptions with definitive illustrations or realized and unrealized projects contemporaneous with the Aalto House, carried out by the Alvar Aalto’s architectural office between 1933 and 1936. Plans and elevations included.

Aalto, Alvar Symposium, 9th: ELEPHANT & BUTTERFLY - PERMANENCE AND CHANCE IN ARCHITECTURE. With Two CDs.
Author: Heikkinen, Mikko, ed
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Finland
At the Alvar Aalto Symposium in 2000, architecture was likened to an elephant. Elephants live a long time and never forget - unlike a butterfly which lives only today and knows nothing of yesterday. What else is left as a testimony of past empires and cultures, if not their architecture? Today, those same old walls seem good enough again as the settings for new uses of all sorts: a 19th century railway station becomes a museum of art, or dockside warehouse is turned into a luxury hotel. And more people are more interested than ever in “genuine” materials and traditional building methods. In the context of this charged atmosphere discussions are made at the 9th Alvar Aalto Symposium, 2003 American artist James Turrell speaks about ‘old ditch and new water’. In Jyväskylä a study is made on the old riverbed’s geology, as it were, and samples are taken of the new water flowing through it. In Alvar Aalto’s works, tradition and evolution live in symbiosis but they often reveal a desire to surprise and amaze - the slightest touch can change everything. This book includes all the lectures, complete with the final discussion on the two cds. Plans and elevations included.

Author: Wedebrunn, Ola, Maija Kairamo, Tapani Mustonen, eds
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The legendary Library, designed by Alvar Aalto (1927-1935), is situated in the beautiful city of Vyborg, Russia, on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, between Helsinki and St Petersburg. In September 2003 the Docomomo International Specialist Committee on Technology (ISC/T) arranged the 7th International Seminar and Workshop of Technology in New York. The title of the seminar was The Case Study and the Technology of Sensations. The aim of the seminar was to experience the technology of the Modern Movement in a workshop held in the chosen case study. The papers presented in this book are the results of research and examinations at the location integrated as theoretical, practical and methodological issues considered in relation to restoration. Various aspects of the building construction as well as lighting, acoustics and the sensations of hands-on experience have been examined.

The building is an unusually successful amalgamation of architecture, painting and sculpture. Design, materials and colours merge to form an indissoluble whole. The museum is a treasure chest of studies in space, proportion, colour, texture and light. The intrepid viewer can continue to discover new architectural surprises, which makes the building seem fresh more than 150 years after it was built. Here is the story of how it came to be, its architecture and means of expression.

CONTEMPORARY CALIFORNIA HOUSES.. Frank Gehry: Schnabel House. Eric Owen Moss: Lawson-Westen House. Franklin D. Israel: Drager House.
Author: Steele, James
Year: 1999
Country or State of Origin: London
These houses have become almost an architectual cliché - houses intended as personal statements of the owner or architect, inextricably linked with the concept of “modern” and noted for their unrestrained imagination. The fact that California is the home of the movie industry further exaggerates the prominence of the California house, making it even more emblematic and larger than life. The three houses - Frank Gehry’s Schnabel House, Eric Owen Moss’s Lawson-Westen House, and Franklin D. Israel design for Sharon Drager - are somehow all beyond imagination and yet quite real, stretching the definition of a house, and yet lived in by real people. Plans and elevations included.

Engstrand, Bertil & Hans Speek: MARTIN LUTHERS KYRKA (Martin Luther’s Church).
Author: Juvander, Katarina. Photography by Jens Lindhe
Year: 2003
Country or State of Origin: Sweden
Designed by architects Bertil Engstrand and Hans Speek in 1965, dates back to a time when Sweden was enjoying an unprecedented economic boom. Society was deeply influenced by economic growth, general optimism and a belief in the future. The church gives clear expression to the spirit of the times. The construction of the building is light with a supporting frame and sheeting all made of slow-oxidising Corteen steel resting on a cast concrete slab. The architects designed the church like an early Christian basilica for the 20th c. using new technology and modern materials for contemporary needs. A book with beautiful photographs that present a warm and unpretentious building designed to a human scale. Plans and elevations included.

EPHEMERAL OF REAL: AN ARCHITECTURE NOVELETTE, THE.
Author: Thurlbourne, Chris
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The narrative is largely based around four conceptual characters: Decadence (the body of creation), The Learner (the infant of knowledge, the sponge (soaking everything in), The Shadow (the keeper, creator of boundaries), and a fourth character representing a creature existing and inhabiting the text. These metaphorical characters take the reader through a very personal presentation of what constitutes architecture. It involves the five human senses, and the impact that the dimension of time has on architectural experience. It involves highly abstract, subjective descriptions of veils, models, and laminations, presented in various text forms: poetry, pure description, prose. An intriguing intellectually stimulating book.

FOSTER, NORMAN.
Author: Holm, Michael & Kjeld Kjeldsen, eds
Year: 2001
Country or State of Origin: Denmark
The story of this unique studio - designed by one of the most innovative architects of our times is the theme of this exhibition: the working processes, the path from idea to realisation, the ongoing dialogue between architects, engineers, model makers, computer operators and contractors. To illustrate as clearly as possible the wide range of Foster’s work and the challenges it presents at all levels, the exhibition concentrates on three projects, each on a different scale: a line of furniture, a small building placed in especially challenging, natural surroundings, and a skyscrapeeer adapted to the busy social life, growth and iconography of a large city. Commissions completed are among many Millennium Bridge and The Great Court, British Museum, in London, England; Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, and Hongkong International Airport, Chek Lap Kok; The New German Parliament, Reichstag, Berlin, Germany and many more.
