Aalto’s life was closely tied to Jyväskyla and its outlying areas, and his later designs are conspicuous in the city’s architecture. In 1969 the Alvar Aalto Museum began operation, and continues to be, as per the wishes of Aalto himself, a living museum, universal, not restricted to the work of a single artist, a museum where the visual arts and architecture are represented in all their complexity.

The Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden was founded in the 1820s with the motto “Science and Art” which, at the time, were considered the foundation for the progress of mankind. The motto’s message still survives strongly today, as the building of the Institute itself was completed with this message in mind.
