PIECES URBAINES / NY FRANSK BYSCENOGRAFI. Urban Fragments New French Urban Scenography

Author: Skousbøll, Karin
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The author has followed the development of French architecture since the legendary rebellion in Paris in May 1968. Twenty-one years later an urban planning strategy emerged in parallel with the “les grands projects” which was called the “pieces urbaines” method, it welcomes the dynamism and natural fragmentation of the city as an alternative to total solutions. Coupled with flexibility and openness to diversity, unity becomes the goal of a process fuelled by creative challenge, rather than simplistic problem solving. The author draws on the works of 4 well-known architects to illustrate the method: Henri Ciriani, Henri Gaudin, Jean-Pieerre Buffi and Christian de Portzamparc, all distinctive personalities in the the theory and practice of architecture.

SURVEYS IN 1961 ON ST. THOMAS & ST. CROIX.

Author: Dahl, Thorkel and Kjeld de Fine Licht
Year: 2004
Country or State of Origin: Denmark

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts West Indian survey is based on a study trip in 1961 to the former Danish islands of St. Thomas, St. Jan and St. Croix. The purpose of the trip was to survey, draw and photograph buildings that were built while the islands were under Danish control (1671-1917), and particularly during the first half of the 19th century. The authors have during this entire period been very interested in this particular part of the Danish colonial history and made yet another trip in 2001 in order to gather further material for the conclusion of the book. This book portrays the results of this trip, and contains information about the construction and utilisation of the buildings as well as information about their occupants, their owners, and (to some extent) their builders.

Summer cottages are an important part of the Finnish lifestyle and identity, and Finland has become the leading country in the world for the number of summer homes in proportion to the size of the population. The book presents 27 summer villas and 17 saunas in Finland, from the marine archipelago via the lake district to the fells of the north - a total of 44 individually designed buildings that represent the best of recent Finnish summer home and sauna architecture.
