CHINESE PAVILION, THE. Dream and Reality

Author: Arvidsson, Catrine
Year: 1997
Country or State of Origin: Sweden

The Chinese Pavilion is a “ ˜strange bird’ in the cultural heritage of Sweden. It was commissioned by Queen Lovisa Ulrika in 1763-69 and designed by the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. For most people, the great fascination with the Chinese Pavilion probably lies in its colorful exoticism and alien appearance in the surrounding environments, its imaginativeness and oriental luminosity, in such strong contrast to the Swedish countryside and parkland landscape. Color photos of the Pavilion from inside and outside, after its renovation was in 1995. Descriptions and photos of what daily life was like at the Pavilion. A colorful gem of a book.

CLASSICAL SWEDISH ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIORS 1650-1840.

Author: Cederlund, Johan
Year: 2006
Country or State of Origin: New York

This beautiful, often breathtakingly lavish architecture and interiors of Sweden between the 1600s and the early 1800s have been among the art world’s best-kept secrets. Overshadowed by the high-profile splendors of Italy and France, and studied and chronicled almost entirely in Swedish, Sweden’s majestic palaces, stately manor houses, and tapestry-like gardens have seemed as remote as the Nordic country itself. Art historian Cederlund introduces the genius of Sweden’s architects, designers, and builders in this book. Presented are such path breakers as Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and Carl Hårleman and the ambitious, discerning monarchs and aristocrats who commissioned their work. Learn how Sweden’s architects and designers mined antique and contempoary southern Europe for styles, techniques, and even artisans: how such marvels as the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Drottningholm, King Gustav III’s beloved Haga took shape and acquired their uniquely Swedish stamp. Step into the rich interiors where Sweden’s kings and their consorts received state visitors, stored and displayed treasures, wrote letters and studied science, and laid their heads to sleep. Plans and elevations included.

CONTEMPORARY CALIFORNIA HOUSES.. Frank Gehry: Schnabel House. Eric Owen Moss: Lawson-Westen House. Franklin D. Israel: Drager House.

Author: Steele, James
Year: 1999
Country or State of Origin: London

These houses have become almost an architectual cliché - houses intended as personal statements of the owner or architect, inextricably linked with the concept of “ œmodern“ and noted for their unrestrained imagination. The fact that California is the home of the movie industry further exaggerates the prominence of the California house, making it even more emblematic and larger than life. The three houses - Frank Gehry’s Schnabel House, Eric Owen Moss’s Lawson-Westen House, and Franklin D. Israel design for Sharon Drager - are somehow all beyond imagination and yet quite real, stretching the definition of a house, and yet lived in by real people. Plans and elevations included.

CONTEMPORARY FINNISH ARCHITECTURE.

Author: Tiainen, Jussi
Year: 2002
Country or State of Origin: Finland

A large part of the photographs presented here were originally commissioned by the architect or client. Tianinen wants to show what is timeless and enduring in architecture, emphasising the importance of roots and eternal values in relation to technology and the pressures of globalism. This book contains both the small and the big. Big impressive sites take turns with small and intimate buildings. The Finnish embassies and other sites abroad complement the image of Finnish architecture. Throughout the book , Tianen’s photographs radiate ease and are uncontrived. Includes plans and elevations.
