In 1981 a process began that proved to be a new direction in Ann Wolff’s aesthetic development. In 1981 Ann Wolff began to draw, freely and autonomously, with no immediate relation to her glasswork. The engraved outlines of female and male nudes, which since 1971 had been a component of her glass compositions, were freed from this material. They began to be drawn with pencil on paper. Step by step, a chain of discoveries, experiments, new beginnings developed, defining each other, affecting one another, circles radiating into even wider circles from a centrifugal force.

Including 122 flatweaves from five different continents, this exhibition focuses on the kilim, a type of Oriental flatweave rug. Early in the 1900s, they were used mostly as drapes and covers, and they often adorned the walls of mens’ smoking rooms and studies. These rugs went out of fashion, however, until they became popular again in the late 1980s because of their inclusion in certain decorator magazines. Today, kilims as art can be subdivided into naturalistic, constructivistic, or abstract forms. This book depicts each of these rugs in large, color illustrations, and it also includes descriptions of the symbols, patterns, and techniques used in each rug as well as commentaries on their functions in the societies from which they originated.

The Scandinavians are known as trendsetters in the design world. It was through the fortunate coexistence of art and industry that the aesthetic and functional design of decorative objects and appliances grew into an important export product. Design became the hallmark of the Scandinavian countries. This is certainly true of Finland, the home of the modern silverware featured in this exhibition. In 1976 the Sterckshof Museum turned the spotlight on Finnish crafts and design and the exhibition provided a good overview of design from the sixties and seventies but it did not touch on precious metals. That is why this time the Silver Centre decided to concentrate on Finnish silver designed by four leading artist-designers in the second half of this century.
